Eesti Energia will be providing the universal service for micro and small businesses

As of 1 November, all micro and small businesses, as well as self-employed persons, foundations and non-profit organizations, can buy electricity from Eesti Energia as part of the universal service.

According to Agnes Roos, Member of the Management Board of Eesti Energia, business customers will not be automatically transferred. Customers have to make the decision themselves and announce their desire to subscribe.

“We will send an offer to all business customers of Eesti Energia who have the right to get the universal service. Offers can be seen in Eesti Energia’s e-service as well. Customers have enough time to think whether the universal service is beneficial to them or not, so, customers will have to give their consent for the switch. If you want to use the universal service retroactively from 1 November, you must accept the offer before 23 November,” Roos emphasized.

Businesses with fewer than 50 employees and an annual turnover or balance sheet total of less than EUR 10 million can choose the universal service. The universal service can also be chosen by non-profit organizations, foundations and self-employed persons up to an annual electricity consumption of 1 GWh. Nearly half of Eesti Energia’s business customers – 16,800 consumers – qualify for the universal service.

The final price of the universal service for business consumers is currently starting from 16.04 c/kWh, plus a monthly fee of €1.658 per metering point (excluding VAT). The price may change over time, so, keep this in mind when making a decision. Businesses can use the universal service for one year and two months: until the end of 2023.

In addition, you should note that, unlike household consumers, the law does not guarantee business consumers to transfer to the universal service without contractual penalties. “Since as an electricity seller, we have made financial transactions in advance for fixed-price contracts, then when switching to the universal service, business consumers must follow the terms of their current electricity contracts,” Roos explained.

The easiest way for Eesti Energia’s business customers to perform operations is to use the self-service of Eesti Energia at www.energia.ee. In addition, assistance is provided by our business customer service on 777 2020 and at arikliendid@energia.ee. Major consumers can get advice from their personal account managers.
