Homeowner Kaido: ‘A smart home needs a strong backbone – that is provided by a fast and stable internet connection’

A modern home is no longer just walls and a roof – it is a complete system where lighting, security, energy management and comfort work hand in hand. That’s exactly the case for Kaido, a user of Enefit’s high-speed internet, whose home is full of smart solutions that rely daily on a stable and fast connection.

We asked Kaido how his smart home functions with the help of Enefit’s internet network and why a high-quality connection is important to him.

‘I recently changed my main place of residence – there, optical internet is provided by Telia. My second home is in Vääna-Jõesuu. A former summer cottage has since become a year-round residence. For a long time, only mobile internet was available there, until Enefit built its own optical data network in the area. ‘I joined as soon as the opportunity arose,’ says Kaido.

When asked about the biggest difference between the two networks, he replies: ‘With Telia, you can only use their services. Enefit’s network generally offers more options – I can select from different telecommunications operators. That’s an important kind of freedom.’

Both of Kaido’s homes are equipped with various smart home solutions. ‘Both houses use Home Assistant, which integrates all systems – lighting, energy monitoring, door and window sensors, motion detectors, cameras, and the heating and cooling system. For example, if someone moves in the yard, the lights come on, and their brightness adjusts according to the sun’s position. Everything works automatically.’

Such a system requires a strong data connection. ‘I also have a backup connection in case someone accidentally cuts a cable,’ says Kaido. ‘But the transmission network has to work flawlessly. An optical fibre connection is ideal for that – it’s stable, fast and minimally affected by external factors,’ he adds.

For Kaido, it’s important that his smart home solutions continue to function even when he’s not at home. ‘Information flows in both directions – from the houses to me and vice versa, no matter where I am. All I need is a working internet connection.’

He shares a recent real-life example: ‘I ordered a portable toilet to be placed near the house for the workers. When it arrived, I needed to make sure it was installed in the agreed spot. I monitored the entire process myself while at the office. In other words, I didn’t have to wait at home or waste working hours – everything was handled remotely. That’s the convenience a smart home and high-speed internet can offer.’

Although a smart home can function without the internet, a quality connection becomes critical if you want to monitor systems remotely, control them, or receive real-time notifications. ‘For example, if a smoke detector sends a notification, but the mobile connection briefly drops out or there’s no access to alerts, you might miss an important warning,’ Kaido explains. ‘In such situations, it’s not just about convenience – it’s about safety.’

When asked how important high-speed internet is for a smart home, Kaido admits that data speed and high stability are absolutely essential for him. ‘I could live without it, but I wouldn’t want to,’ he says.

There’s one thing Kaido is certain about – he plans to further enhance his smart home system in the future. ‘A smart home is like the city of Tallinn – it’s never truly finished. The limitations usually come down to two things: your budget and your imagination – in other words, what exactly you need and how you choose to automate it.’

Finally, when asked what he would recommend to those considering joining Enefit’s internet service, Kaido replies: ‘If you don’t yet have an optical connection, I definitely recommend exploring the options – it’s an investment that truly pays off in everyday use.’

Enefit is expanding its high-speed internet network to rural areas where it hasn’t yet reached. Through our network, you can choose from multiple service providers and enjoy truly fast and stable internet – just like Kaido in Vääna-Jõesuu.

To connect to the service, visit Enefit’s website to check whether it is available at your desired address. If it is, you can sign a contract, after which we’ll begin building the connection.
