An electricity invoice typically consists of electricity consumption costs, the network charge and different taxes. For some consumers, electricity consumption on the invoice is split into two: nighttime and daytime consumption.
Many customers are surprised to learn that a number of electricity packages and network packages are available in either single-tariff or dual-tariff options. While a single-tariff package has the same price day and night, a dual-tariff package has different prices for electricity during the day and at night.
The nighttime tariff does not apply only at night
It may seem logical to assume that the daytime tariff applies during certain hours from Monday to Sunday and that all remaining hours are considered nighttime, but this is not actually the case.
Under a dual-tariff package, the daytime tariff applies from Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 22:00. The nighttime tariff applies from Monday to Friday from 22:00 to 7:00, but also throughout the entire day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
With a single-tariff package, there is no need to worry about the time of day, because regardless of the day of the week or the time, the electricity price remains the same at all times (except for exchange packages, where the price changes every 15 minutes).
The right electricity package for your needs and preferences
As electricity consumption across the network is generally lower during nighttime hours and at weekends, the nighttime tariff is usually lower than the daytime tariff. Therefore, if you know that you tend to use larger amounts of electricity during weekday nights or at weekends, your nighttime consumption is likely to be higher than your daytime consumption. In that case, a dual-tariff package may help reduce your electricity costs. Combined with a dual-tariff network package, the savings may be even greater.
