The green turn, environmentally friendly thinking and sustainable energy solutions are topics that become more and more timely every year. Everyone’s habits have an impact on creating a cleaner future, and green energy is one of the easiest ways to take the first step on this journey.
By letting green energy into your life, you reduce carbon dioxide emissions and your environmental footprint. Let’s take a closer look at what green energy is, how it’s produced and explain how to make consumption more sustainable.
What is green energy?
Green energy is energy produced from renewable sources. In other words, renewable energy sources are those that do not diminish in quantity as they are used, and that are constantly being produced naturally. For example, in Enefit we produce renewable energy from the:
-
- sun,
- wind,
- water,
- biomass.
In case our electricity grid is short of green energy, we buy it from other European electricity producers.
The main advantage of green energy over non-renewable energy sources is that it does not produce harmful compounds and therefore does not pollute the environment around us. So the more green energy we use, the cleaner our environment and air will be.
How can we make our consumption greener?
Switching to green energy is easier than you think, and every household can find ways to start with economical and sustainable energy consumption.
Electricity package. Choosing an electricity package that’s based on renewable energy is one of the easiest environmentally friendly changes you can make – no need to change wires or plugs at home. At Enefit, all of our electricity packages are also available in green. So, whether you have chosen an exchange or a fixed package, you know that the electricity coming out of your plug comes from 100% renewable sources.
If I buy green energy, will the electricity coming out of the socket also be “green”?
The electrons coming from the outlet have no color or name, and according to the laws of physics, the electricity produced closest to the customer reaches the outlet. It is possible to consume green energy thanks to the electricity exchange, which Estonia joined in 2010.
Hundreds of Nordic and Baltic electricity producers – from wind companies to nuclear power plants – sell electricity on the exchange. Electricity companies resell electricity to end consumers. When you choose a green energy package, we guarantee that the amount of electricity you consume will be generated from renewable sources.
Solar panels. By installing a home solar plant, you can cover the entire energy need of your building with panels. In addition to environmental sustainability, panels help to save on electricity costs. The savings come from various fees and taxes, such as network charges, renewable energy fees, excise duties and VAT, which you have to pay when buying electricity from the grid.
If the solar panels produce more energy than needed, the remainder can be sold back to the grid and generate revenue.
Electric car charging. Transport preferences have a significant impact on our environmental footprint. If walking, cycling or public transport is not an option, drive an electric car instead of an internal combustion engine car, which emits no emissions and keeps the environment cleaner.
The level of ecological performance of an electric car is also influenced by the electricity used to charge it. That is why all Enefit Volt public chargers use only green energy. You can find the nearest one to you on our map.
